On the evening of July 14, 2021, a flood wave caused the usually tranquil Ahr River in Rhineland-Palatinate to swell to over seven meters. The water swept away cars and houses, and 135 people died. In North Rhine-Westphalia and Belgium as well, heavy rain and flooding caused enormous destruction. What exactly happened on the night of the flood? And was it simply a weather event, or is climate change also to blame?
For this emotional documentary, brave rabbit created a series of animations to illustrate the dramatic and rapid rise of the water, as well as the areas affected by the flooding. It was essential to keep the animation style neutral and map-like, in order to avoid intruding on the personal tragedy of those impacted.
